Prisoners’ Dilemma in Duopoly (Super)games1

چکیده
The choice between quantity and price in order to stabilize collusion is modeled here. It is shown that this relocates the prisoners’ dilemma backwards, from the market stage to the stage where the market variable is chosen in order to sustain collusion, and where discount rates appear as the payo¤s. Likewise, a prisoners’ dilemma arises also when both the market variable and the type of behavior (cooperative or non-cooperative) are simultaneously chosen. JEL classi...cation: C72, D43, L13.

Strategic delegation under cost asymmetry
We revisit the two-stage duopoly game with strategic delegation and asymmetric technologies of Sen and Stamatopoulos (2015). We show that their conclusions are misled by the restrictive assumption that the extent of delegation to managers is restricted to a binary set. Allowing for a continuous set of delegation incentives, we prove that the delegation stage is a prisonersdilemma, the unique s...
متن کاملPrisoners' Dilemma Supergame on Rectangle Lattice
In this paper a class of large supergames, i.e., infinitely repeated games played by many players are studied. The players located on the vertex set of planar rectangle lattice play several basic games with his neighbors. The basic game is two-person prisoners’ dilemma game with asymmetric payoffs. Under the conditions of the pre-specified updating rules and the transition probabilities, the re...
متن کاملTime to Defect: Repeated Prisoners’ Dilemma Experiments with Uncertain Horizon
Using a symmetric 2-person prisoners’ dilemma as the base game, each player receives a signal for the number of rounds to be played with the same partner. The actual number of rounds (the length of the supergame) is determined by the maximal signal where each player expects the other’s signal to be smaller, respectively larger, by a fixed number of rounds with 50% probability. In the tradition ...
متن کاملProduct Durability in Markets with Consumer Lock-in
This paper examines a two-period duopoly where consumers are lockedin by switching costs that they face in the second period. The paper’s main focus is on the question of how the consumer lock-in affects the firms’ choice of product durability. We show that firms may face a prisoners’ dilemma situation in that they simultaneously choose nondurable products although they would have higher profit...
متن کاملSequential Equilibria in the Repeated Prisoners’ Dilemma with Private Monitoring
We analyze the infinitely repeated prisoners’ dilemma with imperfect private monitoring. The efficient outome can be approximated in any prisoners’ dilemma game, while every individually rational feasible payoff can be approximated in a class of prisoner dilemma games. Our results require that monitoring be sufficiently accurate but do not require very low discounting.
